Global Shading Day: Why Shading Matters More Than You Think

Global Shading Day is coming up on 21st March, and it’s something we’re pleased to support.

It’s one of those things that doesn’t always get much attention, but once you start thinking about it, you realise how much of a difference it makes. Shading tends to sit quietly in the background, yet it has a real impact on how comfortable a space feels day-to-day.

At Cooks Blinds, it’s something we talk about with customers all the time. Often it starts with a simple requirement - reducing glare, adding a bit of privacy, or finishing a room properly. But very quickly, the conversation moves on to how a space actually behaves, particularly when it comes to heat and light.

Most of us have experienced rooms that are fine in the morning, but by the afternoon become uncomfortable because of direct sunlight. Once that heat builds up, it’s difficult to deal with. The right shading helps manage it much earlier, keeping rooms cooler without having to rely on fans or air conditioning.

It’s not just about warmer days either. During the colder months, managing light and heat loss becomes just as important. Shading can help keep temperatures more consistent, making spaces feel more comfortable throughout the day.

There’s also a wider point to it. Energy use is something more people are thinking about, whether at home or in commercial spaces. Shading isn’t the only solution, but it does play a part. By helping to regulate temperature naturally, it can reduce the need for heating and cooling and support a more efficient way of running a building.

That’s really what Global Shading Day is about. It’s a chance to recognise something that’s always there, doing its job quietly, but making a noticeable difference.

From our side, it’s something we’re always happy to talk through. Whether it’s blinds, shutters or awnings, the aim is always the same - to help create spaces that feel comfortable, practical and right for how they’re used.
