The temperature has dropped, the trees have shed their leaves and winter is most definitely on its way. Whether you use it for your car, as a workshop, as a studio or for storage, a garage is much more vulnerable to the elements than the rest of the home. To keep your garage, and everything in it, safe and secure over winter there are a few simple things you can do to keep it warm and dry.

Freezing Temperatures

Over Christmas, it can be handy to have a room as cold as your fridge to store the sprouts and bottles of bubbly that don’t fit in the kitchen but, for the rest of winter, the cold can do damage. Prevent draughts by sealing or re-sealing window sills and door frames. If your garage has an internal door into the house, use an under-door draught excluder and to stop the cold coming into your home.

Insulate

While homes are built with insulation in the walls and ceilings, garages are often neglected. Whether your garage is attached to your house or separate, insulating the walls will control temperatures throughout the year. Insulated plasterboard is an effective and relatively simple way to insulate a garage with a bare brick wall.

Basic garage doors are made to keep intruders out but don’t do much to keep out the cold or rain. Hormann sectional garage doors are available with double skinned insulated steel and have thermal breaks between the frame and brickwork for optimal insulation. Thermally-efficient garage doors make a huge difference to the temperature in a garage, as well as being incredibly robust and long-lasting.

Water Damage

As well as keeping out the cold, it’s important to keep out the rain, frost and snow. Clear out gutters which may be blocked by autumn leaves and moss. Blocked gutters can leak into the garage and clearing up the mess is far more troublesome – and expensive – than just clearing gutters. Having a properly fitted garage door will also protect rainwater or melting snow coming in under the door, our ranges have smart seals and frame shoes to keep your garage dry.
