Now that winter is most definitely here and the days are shorter than ever, there’s nothing better than curling up on the sofa with a mug of tea, pack of biscuits and a favourite book. A warm, comfortable home is inviting to you and to guests, so we’ve rounded up our top tips for making your home beautiful and cosy.

Throw out the Catalogue

A home that looks like a picture from a catalogue isn’t cosy. Don’t focus too much on everything matching. Injecting personality into a home is what makes a room cosy: photos, knick-knacks and childhood treasures make a house a home.

Let There be Light

Harsh, overhead lighting is the antithesis of cosy. Opt for floor lamps and table lamps that you can use to control the mood with and create ambient lighting with warm bulbs. Control the light coming through windows with the right blinds and curtains. A single heavy curtain only gives you one option for light – a venetian blind with pretty drapes lets you set the mood.

Soft, Soft, Soft!

It’s an obvious one to begin with, soft furnishings = cosy. Curtains, rugs and throws that are soft to the touch will also give a room warmth and soften the space. Mix up textures to make a room tactile and interesting to the senses – leather, wool, velvet, corduroy and fluffy textures that instantly make you want to treat a cushion like a cat, they just want to be stroked!

Layouts and Lines

Soft furnishings make a room feel softer, but you can also use them to stop a room looking hard. Break up angular sight lines with round rugs and flowing curtains, soften the look of a hard chair with a cushion or throw. Keep layouts simple and easy to manoeuvre, cosy doesn’t mean cluttered! Cosy is about making a space as comfortable as possible – so don’t squeeze so much into a space that you or a guest need to move things out of the way to get to the sofa.
